I have an Android tablet, and my seven year old son is always going totally crazy with it. He loves it and wants to play with it all time. I decided to look for a tablet that was specifically made for kids, I looked at the Leapfrog tablet and the Innopad. I decided to go with the MEEP tablet because it runs Android 4. He is already familiar with this operating system so I thought this would be the best option. Oregon Scientific MEEP! Tablet for Kids is like an adult table but for kids. My son has had it for two weeks and he has not put it down.

Meep tablet’sĀ Appearance
The Oregon Scientific MEEP Tablet for Kids is white with an orange silicon sleeve to protect it. The sleeve is great if your child is very energetic, and you do not want them to damage the device.
However, if you are not concerned about this, you can actually remove it if you wish to do so. When you take the sleeve off, it just looks like a cool tablet. It doesn’t even look like it is for kids at all, when you take the sleeve off. It is made with very tough plastic though, and it would take a lot to break it.
Operating System
Okay, so the operating system is Android 4 which is a pretty powerful operating system for a tablet designed for a child. Most kids tablets are not built around an operating system, most of them have game cartridges and apps you can only download from a limited source.
However, there are hundreds of apps you can download with this device. You can download apps and games through Google play too which is a good. I was a bit sceptical at first because I was worried about the parental controls. However, there is a cloud based parental control system for peace of mind.
The responsiveness of the operating system is pretty impressive for a kids tablet. However, it is not as quick punchy as an adults tablet obviously. My son is really in love with it though, so that is all that matters.
Apps and Games On TheĀ Oregon Scientific MEEP Tablet
You can download hundreds of games for free or you can purchase cool apps from the android store. My son has easily downloaded eight apps and games so far, he also downloaded one educational ebook which I have read to him several times. I had to show my son how to download stuff and he got the hang of it quite fast, which is great.
Even though there are parental controls on this Oregon Scientific MEEP! Tablet for Kids, I would strongly recommend that you supervise your child when they are downloading apps. It does depend on their age though, my son is seven years old and I still supervise him.
The apps on the Meep tablet are educational, fun and entertaining, one of the apps my son downloaded was a virtual guitar application. Which allows you to learn how to play on a virtual guitar. He loves music,so he also downloaded a virtual piano and a drawing game. I encouraged him to download a reading application, he loved it and has learned so much from it.
Camera and Video Recorder
The camera is a 3 mega pixel camera, the quality is okay. You can take front facing pictures, as in pictures of yourself. However, you can’t take outward pictures, which is cool for kids really because they generally like taking pictures of themselves.
You can also edit the pictures with photo editing applications such as Photoshop basic. The video recorder captures video footage and allows you to edit the videos using video editing software you can download from the application store. My son loves taking pictures of himself, and I help him to edit the pictures.
The camera is easy to use, and the camera icon is pretty easy to find on the dashboard. You can also e mail the pictures straight away which is good. You can also transfer the pictures and the videos to your computer using a USB cable.
Touch screen Technology
The touch screen uses something called Zforce technology. I have never heard of this technology before but I really like it. The screen feels kind of squishy when you touch it, which my son loves. It also pretty responsive, and rarely freezes. Even my Android tablet freezes sometimes, but this one has probably only frozen once since my son has had it.
WiFi
The Oregon Scientific MEEP! Tablet for Kids has wireless technology. So you can log on to any wireless Internet connection quickly and easily. The Internet is pretty speedy as well, it has a standard browser; and you can also download Opera. Which I think is slightly faster than the standard browser.
Online Chat
There is an online chat system that your child can use securely. I have not tested it out yet because my son is not really interested in chat. To be honest I do not think this is something that children under the age of 10 years old should be accessing. You can lock this feature if you like however, it is safe to use because the tablet is a KidSafe certified device.
Cloud Based Parental Control
There is cloud based parental control software on the Meep tablet. Which basically means that you control what your child is able to access without having to actually tap into the tablet. It can be controlled remotely through your own computer using cloud technology. Although I have a tablet, I am not the most technical person in the world. I thought I would find it difficult to set up. However, it was okay, I found it quite straightforward to set up, and I am happy with how effective the technology is for parental control purposes.
Memory
There is 4GB internal memory on the Meep! Tablet however, if you think this is not enough. You can actually expand the memory, as there is an SD card slot. Which is great, if your child wants to download lots of games and apps.
Who is the Meep tablet Good For?
On the box it says that the Oregon Scientific MEEP! Tablet for Kids is suitable for children between the age of six and 10 years old. I think this is just about right, I do not think it is suitable for younger children.
Where can You Buy it?
I have not done a lot of research on where else you can buy it. Because I bought mine from Amazon, I buy most of my electrical stuff from Amazon. I never find anything cheaper anywhere else. You could probably get it from good toy stores, or department stores but I have not looked around. I paid $149 for it and got free shipping too. Overall, I am very happy with the Meep tablet and I would recommend to any parent who would like to buy a tablet for their pre-teen.
